Welcome

The main aim of this website is as a one-stop easy-to-use resource for Scottish media studies teachers and students. It should also be useful for media studies teachers in other countries.

Rick Instrell is a media education consultant and trainer based in Scotland. He runs CPD/INSET courses for teachers and lecturers throughout the UK and acts as an educational consultant to local authorities and companies producing educational materials.

He was the educational consultant in a major project on 'Channel 4 News' called 'Breaking the News' (www.c4breakingthenews.co.uk). In 2006 the project won a Royal Television Society award for best secondary education website. He is also acting as consultant to the University of Aberdeen for Master's level modules in media education.

Rick also offers media-related customised training in any subject area where teachers would like to develop their own knowledge: Media Studies, media literacy, English, Modern Studies, Sociology, History, Modern Languages, ICT, Art and Design. He is also available to schools who would like to develop media-related activities within A Curriculum for Excellence e.g. Enterprise, Citizenship, Sustainable Development, Creativity.

He was a member of the Forrester Media Group which in 1980 pioneered the development of media studies in Scotland. A founder member of AMES (Association for Media Education in Scotland) he is a regular contributor to its Media Education Journal. He has helped design media courses for colleges of education as well as the Scottish Qualifications Authority Media Studies Arrangements for all levels from Access to Advanced Higher.

Until January 2005, Rick was Principal Teacher of Computing and Media Studies at Lasswade High School Centre, Midlothian. He was director of the University of Edinburgh Film Studies Summer School for 13 years and is a British Film Institute Associate Tutor, a GTCS registered CPD provider and an Associate Tutor with the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education.
