Rick Instrell has degrees in Mathematics, Physics, Education and Mass Communication and is available as educational consultant for media-related and general educational projects.

He acted as consultant for the Higher Still Development Unit in the development of National Qualifications in Media Studies.

He has acted as consultant to Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh in the development of Master's modules in Media Studies and is currently acting as consultant to University of Aberdeen in developing Master's modules in Media Education.

He is currently working with Learning and Teaching Scotland on Sustainable Development Education, developing materials for Higher English and Higher Media Studies on media-related aspects of climate change.

He is willing to work with any school or local authority wishing to develop media education programmes.

Rick was educational consultant for Illumina Digital on Breaking the News a web-based resource for teaching television news based on Channel Four News. In 2006 Breaking the News won a Royal Television Society educational television award in the secondary interactive category.

“This resource does far more than it says on the tin. Its use extends way beyond media studies, for which it is primarily intended.  It's an online resource which stimulates, informs and challenges viewers’ engagement with television as a whole. It's Channel 4 at its best.”
