Teaching Higher English Section D: Film & TV Drama

“The Godfather” was recently voted best film of all-time both by filmmakers and filmgoers in an “Empire” poll. It is an ideal text for Higher English especially as it can complement the study of a Shakespeare tragedy.

Target Audience: Teachers of English with no or limited experience of teaching moving image texts. Delegates should view “The Godfather” (Francis Ford Coppola, USA, 1972) prior to the course.
Aims: The course will
1. Use “The Godfather” to illustrate the basic critical terms of film analysis
2. Describe approaches for teaching “The Godfather”
3. Use scenes from “The Godfather” to outline answers for selected questions from Higher English Section D.
Cost: £125 (includes buffet lunch and CD-ROM of resources)

Teaching through Animated Film in P5-7/S1-2

Moving image education is a key way of delivering ACfE outcomes in a range of curriculum areas. The Disney/Pixar feature “WALL•E” and the related computer game will be used to illustrate the teaching and learning approaches. The potential of animation as a primary/secondary transition project will also be considered.

Target Audience: P5-P7 or S1-S2 teachers interested in using animated film as a motivating context for
achieving level 2 and 3 ACfE outcomes.
Aims: The course will
1. Outline what teachers need to know about animation
2. Describe a range of pupil activities which use animation as a context
3. Match activities to level 2 and level 3 ACfE draft outcomes in a range of curriculum areas.
Cost: £125 (includes buffet lunch and CD-ROM of teaching materials)
